Louisiana Children's Code by Claire Bergeron Edwards

I've prepared a presentation on Louisiana Children's Code for Monday, October 27 at the Together We Can Conference in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Starting in September 2024, I started speaking about Louisiana Children's Code, in an effort to bring what feels like a clunky body of law into life.

• September 30, 2024: Southside Lafayette Library- Children's Code discussion for one hour started with Juvenile Delinq and Traffic, including IAA's and DDA's, and further included Child In Need of Care discussions.

• December 19, 2024: Lafayette Bar Association CLE By the Hour- "Custody 101" presented by Claire to attorneys and judges who do not primarily practice family law or juvenile law. The main focus was vocabulary, and charts were utilized to explain differences between Civil Code and Children's Code.

• July 24, 2025: Public Defender Juvenile Justice Summit- "Juvenile Court 101: What I Wish I Had Known When I Started" presented by Claire to attorneys who practice indigent defense in Juvenile Courts around the state. Parents' attorneys, children's attorneys, and DCFS attorneys attended. This presentation focused on the procedure of a CINC case , ensuring attendants could separate each of the types of hearings required by the Children's Code.

• August 15, 2025: Lafayette Bar Association Family Law Section- "Children's Code 101" presented with ADA Angela Wagar. This discussion focused on terminology found in Juvenile court for the non-Juvenile yes-Family Law attorney. Emphasis on proceedings that are exclusive to Juvenile Court, ex: Termination of Parental Rights. Additionally, intervention, in which a non-parent files a request to be part of a CINC case was explained.
